Bro do you even lift
I've heard Fernandina beach mentioned on PoA a few times, but I'm wondering if it's a good destination for a golfing/gambling weekend with the guys.
One of my buds wants to go to Charleston, which I've been to once before and it is a great town, but our primary mission is 1) golf, 2) gambling, 3) cool places to drink at night.
Charleston doesn't have gambling so my thought was, what happens if it rains during the day and we can't golf? I know, I know, we're stuck drinking all day, really horrible, but for realz, what would we do?
I know the Jacksonville area at least has poker at dog tracks, I'd like to at least be able to win enough money to pay for my flight down there (see, kinda NA but not entirely NA), but also maybe not be right in Jacksonville.

ok, thoughts?

Counting on winning enough at a Dog Track is a worse bet than betting on the weather. You'd be better off with 4 of you starting up a game in your hotel room. That way, between the 4 of you, you would break even rather than having the track clean all of you out.

Now if you just want to gamble and don't really care too much if you win or lose, have at it.

so, I'm not going to get into a lengthy discussion about gambling, but to clarify, I said 'poker', which from what I understand in Jacksonville the only place you can find poker is at dog tracks. I do NOT bet on dogs or horses. I am, however, decent enough at poker to come out ahead. typically when I fly commercial to visit my parents in south florida I hit the hard rock and my goal is to cover the cost of the trip, which is usually no problem.

Fernandina has things to do on th eweekend during the days but the weekdays are sleepy. The FBO is great and they have car rentals if you're flying in.

Jax is about a 40 minute drive (very scenic run) and there's plenty to do anytime there. The craft brewery scene is blowing up, there's two dog tracks, a casino place (Best Bet) and a casino boat, plus off shore fishing charters, the beach bars, etc. Just a bit south from there you have St. Augustine which is a cool place to kill a day, but not really a guys trip kind of thing, more of a day with your wife deal.

If you're in Charlotte I'd think there are plenty of places closer that are just as much fun, are you planning to drive, fly or commercial fly?

No, we have BestBet which is a massive poker room and the Casino boat...don't remember what it's called. I think Victory something.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not anti-gambling. I have made more trips to Vegas, MS, Atlantic City and various gambling cruise ships than I can remember. But Florida has traditionally been a very anti-gambling state. What gambling there is is so highly regulated and taxed that the house has to set ridiculous odds to make a profit. There are very few gamblers that consistently win large sums in these places. If you are one of those few, then odds are you are in the wrong profession.

What about myrtle beach? Do they have gambling or is that a South Carolina thing. I know they have a crapload of golf courses.

I think Myrtle has a casino boat....goes out for like 4 hours or something. Yeah Myrtle isn't entirely off the table.

Bahamas. Our Lucaya on Grand Bahama and Atlantis on Paradise Island. Too bad the strip on the island side is gone.:( But you can get there from Nassau easy enough. There are some nice golf courses in the Bahamas, and real casinos. Night life is everything goes.

anything from myrtle beach to Jacksonville to northern fla I would like to fly down in either the arrow or lance, depending on whats available. we've ruled out Cherokee casino in western NC and Mardi Gras in WV, but absolutely open to suggestions.

Jax has a lot to do, but I don't know that I'd fly into Fernandina if you plan to spend the time in Jax. Just fly into Craig (KCRG) or St. Augustine (KSGJ).

Jax has more golf than Fernandina and Amelia, more bars, more beaches, more gambling huts, a Carnival cruise, strip clubs where the girls have most of their teeth...the list goes on and on.

Also 100LL at Fernandina is TERRIBLY expensive.

The casino boat in JAX is nasty and dirty. But its gambling. Dog tracks here have great poker. KSGJ for the one in St Johns only 13 minute drive give or take

If you want to stay on Amelia Island, go to Fernandina Beach. If you're wanting to stay in Jax, I'd pick St. Augustine over Craig more for the fuel price and FBO than anything else. Herlong would be a good place to consider as well, but it will be a bit farther from hotels/beach.
