I’m 47 and my wife is 50. She was diagnosed 7 years ago with metastatic breast cancer. She has been doing really well and in remission the last 7 years till about 6 months ago where she had slight progression.

Her oncologist changed her meds and she has been doing really well.

I’ve always wanted to get my pilots license and have just kept putting it off. We have 2 daughters 17 and 11.

My wife has given me full support to get my pilot license.

I, however, much as I want this have reservations about mainly the what ifs happening to me with aviation. Despite her blessings, I still feel some guilt, pressure, and some level of selfishness.

Any guidance, thoughts, and suggestions are welcomed.

Listen to @kayoh190

I’ll add time is the most valuable resource available to a human being. It’s finite and there are no do overs.

My dad died from a traumatic injury accident at 56 and he was healthy as a horse. I hold onto every memory I have of my time with him.

You never know man you may be the one on the early departure path. I vote for living your life without regrets.

My $.02 based on my parents and in-laws…There will very possibly come a time where nearly 100% of your life will revolve around caring for your wife. It will be mentally and physically draining. Don’t guilt yourself into starting that before it’s necessary.

If you can manage to schedule 2-3 lessons a week and handle the cost, then there’s the time and money guilt element taken care of. As for the safety aspect, which I got the impression from your post, flight training is safe and being a student is the safest you’ll be as a pilot.

Live your life. That's what your wife wants you to do. But before you make up your mind, buy a whole bunch of life insurance NOW. Once you decide you're going to fly, it will get much more $$.

There was some else here who went through the same thing a couple years ago. He got it. Can’t remember who but if I saw his avatar I think I would remember.

Go for it, don't wait.
My wife gave me
a introductory flight for my birthday. I sat on it for 2 years.
She got on me about not taking it before it expired.
I went and took the flight at 55 years old. Wish I was younger but have never regretted it.
I regretted waiting for 2 years to start my training.
It took me 1.5 years to get my PPL and was a big commitment. Lot's of time away from my wife and work. I wore out a truck driving back and forth to the airport.
It changed our lives for the better.
Got to thank my wife and many instructors who helped me become a pilot.

You can realistically get your PPL within a month if you go 4-5 times a week. Go for it!!

Get your medical first, Use shepardair for the written and do that first. Then go for the PPL.
