Haven’t seen a post from @FastEddieB in a while, anyone heard any news? Hopefully he’s recovering on a nice warm beach somewhere!

I’m doing great - thanks for asking!

I’m just a few days away from the 3 month post-surgery date. That’s when the prohibition on lifting more than 10 lbs expires. I feel like I’m back to my old self. Sadly, though we did a quick whirlwind trip to FL recently for a wedding, it was a bit chilly down there and it’s a frigid 14° here in E TN this morning. Looking forward to getting back on the bike when it warms up a bit.

Great to hear, glad the recovery is going well! Yeah, we’re 14 degrees this morning.

Great milestone to reach. Ease back into heavier stuff; you’d be surprised at how much atrophy will have set in.

I was in close to the best shape of my life when I had an issue that sidelined me for about three months; it took nine more months to get back to 90% of my previous capability.

That’s what I’m afraid of. I was back to walking 2 miles in hilly E TN pretty quickly - within maybe 2 weeks of getting home.

But the atrophy is real. Fortunately I have my newish e-bike to help me ease back into attacking the hills near me. But they still have me on “blood thinners” for now, so I need to try really hard not to take a spill.

I quickly read this as "lifting more than 10 lbs of explosives", and was going to say "Eddie, I don't think you should be carrying ANY explosives around for a while."

Glad you're continuing to do better!

I'll post this update here, since it's the most recent thread on my surgery and recovery.

Yesterday was LIBERATION DAY! In that I'm now officially 3 months post-surgery.

That means I'm no longer restricted to lifting no more than 10 lbs* and last night was the last dose of my prescribed "blood thinner".

Anyway, I feel pretty much like my old self. Just need to get back in shape, cardio- and strength-wise. Made it into the gym for the first time yesterday and started out with pretty light weights. Looking forward to getting back on the bike, though we've got 4+ inches of snow on the ground right now in E TN and I HATE cycling in cold weather. Do have stationary bikes both at home and in the gym.

It's another 3 months before I can be PIC, and I'll probably need to jump through a bunch of hoops to get a 3rd class medical. Heart valve replacement eliminates BasicMed as an option, and even Sport Pilot with a d/l is questionable.

Anyway, thanks everyone for your concern and support.

*I'll admit that 10 lb limit became harder and harder to abide with, but I've never felt any discomfort lifting slightly in excess of that recently.

After my AVR replacement Dr Bruce guided me through the tests needed (and required results) and then submitted the package. It went smooth as silk. If you need a well versed AME for this, you can’t do any better!

Yeah, you'd need to get a fresh SI Class 3 before you could do Basic again. IIRC, you previously had an SI for kidney stones, right? That would be a do-over, too. Essentially starting from scratch to get a new medical. Stating the obvious, but do a consultation before rolling the dice for the class 3. No point in wrecking the legality of Sport Pilot. MOSAIC has made many more planes available to SPs, so if the class 3 hill looks like too much time and hassle, you're really not in a bad spot with Sport.
