FAA safety alert tackles exploding coffee filters

Meanwhile, 787 APU batteries are burning up while the FAA worries about coffee filters. :goofy:

Let us sleep well tonight knowing the FAA has the right priorities.

Cheers

Good grief...

Well, maybe it's not as odd as it seems. A ripper can make for laughs once in a while; but I can understand how his co-workers might quickly tire of the humor.

On the other hand, the employee might have a legitimate medical problem which would put him or her under the purview of the ADA, in which case the Agency would have to make reasonable accommodations. Whether that might be a private (or outdoor) office or carbon-filtered underwear would require study by an appropriately-vested committee.

and the choir said, "YGBSM!"

This needs could be in the thread Bill started about drug warnings.

Hot Coffee is hot. A closed volume will expand when exterior pressure is reduced. IT'S BASIC PHYSICS FOLKS!
We have a coffee maker in the plane too and any filter I've seen for it is porous so the water can get to the grounds. If the water can enter the filter how is the air not getting out?

I think the hot coffee oil fills the pores. Eventually over time it would fail slowly but in a speedy decompression it will blow up.

Similar to an air filled, wet pillow case in the washer.

I've never seen that happen to our filters. Maybe our pores are bigger. :D

I think the problem is that if it is not put in properly or if you put in two, the water in the basket backs up and overflows. Then if you try to pull the pot or basket out while it is still brewing, you spill.

Either that or terrorists have infiltrated the coffee supplier.

You know what's fun...taking something in one of those nice airtight Pelican cases, venting it at 11,000' and then sealing it up nice and airtight, then laughing while the guy tries to open it back on the ground.

My scuba computer box did that! It burped at altitude and in the hotel it was sealed shut with my brand new computer inside.

Had to drill the case with a sharp pair of tweezers to break the seal. Talk about a monkey and a football for a while.
