The Garmin 430 does not repeat not fly PT's or holding patterns. If left to its own devices, it will, when it crosses the fix, turn in the shortest direction back to the fix, and 50/50 that's going to be on the unprotected side (nonholding or away from the barb). Therefore, if you're flying a PT, you must shift the a/p to HDG mode when you're ready to leave the outbound radial for the PT and fly it through the outbound PT leg and inbound turn via the heading bug before reengaging the NAV mode to reintercept the inbound course.
Ditto HP's -- you must go to HDG for the oubound turn, outbound leg, and starting the inbound turn. Once you have the nose pointed back towards the inbound leg, you can reengage NAV on the a/p and it will intercept the inbound leg back to the fix. If you're flying a HPILPT and will depart the fix inbound to the runway upon the second crossing of the fix, you can leave it in NAV. If you are remaining in the HP, you must reselect HDG mode once again to fly the oubound turn, outbound leg, and starting the inbound turn back to the fix.
