No reason any not. Mooneys got slower when they stopped using wooden wings. de Havilland Mosquitoes were among the fastest aircraft of WWII, made out of wood composites.

Interesting. Don't know if the Brits are still making Morgans, but they used to have a wood frame. Wood is a fine material for cars, boats, and planes.
