(Microsoft) platforms vice-president Jim Allchin told at a recent Windows Vista reviewers conference about chief executive Steve Ballmer.

It seems Steve was at a friend's wedding reception when the bride's father complained that his PC had slowed to a crawl and would Steve mind taking a look.
Allchin says Ballmer, the world's 13th wealthiest man with a fortune of about $18 billion, spent almost two days trying to rid the PC of worms, viruses, spyware, malware and severe fragmentation without success.

He lumped the thing back to Microsoft's headquarters and turned it over to a team of top engineers, who spent several days on the machine, finding it infected with more than 100 pieces of malware, some of which were nearly impossible to eradicate.

:hairraise:

Good practice for Microsoft then. :)

What are these people doing, or where are they going that they get all this crap on their computer? I have 9 computers online, NONE with and sotware based virus/spyware/malware protection, and I get nothing, nada, zip zilch. When I do run a scan from trendmicro every once in a while just to have a look see the only thing that pops up as "bad" is cookies.

Well, that's a damn site better customer service than I've ever received from Apple.

You think if I sent him mine he would do the same thing for me?

(Not that I'm having the same problems...)

Well.

I *HIGHLY* doubt they took Microsoft's actual software engineers that knew what they were doing and told them fix this at all costs. Because they would be able to fix it. It's stupid to think that they wouldn't.

Why would Steve be able to fix it? He's an executive. I wouldn't expect him to. It's not his job.

This is just where the technical people like to make fun of the higher up executives because they don't understand how to hack this or that. I hate that attitude. That attitude only hurts us.

I'd be willing to bet the vast majority of us couldn't do Steve's job.

BTW. I am not a fan of Microsoft AT ALL. But this article doesn't really say much.

Jesse this remark seems to be coming out of left field. The article says they were engineers and it took them several days to fix - makes perfect sense to me.

That said, I tend to agree with the attitude about the execs...

And how many articles get aviation stories correct? Why would they get a software story correct?

Why didn't they just take to the Geek Squad guys at Best Buy?

They would have had it *fixed* in an hour or so. OK. They would have kept it for few days for grins.

Oh. Do you think Steve's buddy wanted to keep his data?

FYI, large companies will have a dedicated IT support team whose sole job is to support the execs. They don't live like we do.
