The crash at Loraine County yesterday hits home with me... I fly right past KLPR frequently - as the chief pilot on Gramma Char's Airline for advantaged grandchildren.. I knew Mr. Brown casually and my daughter and her husband have a cottage near the Brown's cottage and are good friends with the Browns and family - my daughter called me shortly after the crash, shocked and crying...
I also know Loraine County airport well having landed there a number of times, including having to shoot the ILS right down to minimums one night and going missed because it was below minimums at the moment I hit DH... Went around and got it right at minimums on the second pass...

You/I would think that pro pilots in a turbo prop would not hit the ground short of the runway in daylight - albeit thick, nasty haze... I have no idea what led to the crash but local folks report the plane blasting over their house, down much lower than hey were used to hearing...
I have always liked the idea of a radar altimeter as a belt and suspenders insurance policy... Never had one...

and another one

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service employee and a contractor were killed when their small plane crashed in an Oregon forest.

Sorry to hear about your friends, Denny. Saw the news stories this morning. That crash looked awful. What kind of turboprop was he flying?

EDIT: disregard; found it: MU-2...

I'm working and staying not 10 miles from KLPR. I drove up yesterday because I had stops to make and the forecast was pretty dicey.

But...

An MU-2 flies from Gainsville FL to Lorain County. How much fuel do they have left?

Lorain County was apparently below minimums because they went missed once.

Where the ceilings any better anywhere within 200nm? I know they weren't along the route of my drive yesterday. I started the day just north of Louisville and don't recall seeing the top of a cell tower the entire drive.

So, did they maybe have no choice but to try to force it in or run out of fuel before finding higher ceilings?

All speculation...I have no idea what the ceilings were like east or west but they sure sucked far to the south and here in Lorain County.
