Elmendorf bids farewell to C-130

Fond memories of first airplane ride summer 1960 on C-130 from McGuire AFB to RAF Lakenheath, refueling in Newfoundland and Ireland -- was supposed to be a 17-hour flight, but we lost an engine mid-Atlantic and it took longer.

Thanks for posting.

Did you ever find that engine??

BTW RAF Mildenhall 1983 to 1985 and I flew Piper Tomahawks out of the RAF Lakenheath Aeroclub.

When were you there?

Neighbor! RAF Chelveston 1960 to 1963.

I was a passenger. Took another 30+ years to even consider sitting in front of first class.

Last I looked, the engine was somewhere in Shannon, Ireland.

I consider that pilot to be a hero--not so much for flying the airplane as for how he cared for and treated his passengers. Despite orders to continue to the UK on 3 engines and customs regulations that forbade the purchase of any goods except in the freeport, he landed, refused to take off with that engine, and smuggled in boxes of diapers and baby food for the 50 passengers he had who were under age 2. He expected to get fired as soon as he returned home.
