Does anyone knows where I can download current FAR in *.pdf format?

P.S. I have looked at FAA web site and only been able to find PTSs in pdf format

Cut and paste into a word processing app.

Thanks but I'm not sure if it;s going to work. I use e-CFR all the time, but wondering if there pdf version that I could upload on my cell phone. As far as PTSs in pdf format they work like a charm in this respect.

Well each individual section of 14cfr is available in PDF format on the eCFR, but it will take you a while :(

Hey, if anyone knows where to download the entire 14CFR, I'd be interested too! I think that some textbooks had it available on CD (though usually out of date), but I haven't seen it freely available on the Internet.

Eh, not were I see it? online access, yes, but download? True, you could save each part as an HTML file with associated graphics and access it offline with a browser, but that's not quite what I had in mind. (And yeah, the entire 14CFR is more than I need. Those parts typically contained in our FAR/AIM books would probably be sufficient.) So I guess I'm looking for .PDF, .DOC, .RTF, or even .TXT files. Is that there and I'm missing it? If not, are there copyright issues if I were to do what I described above, zip up the files, and made it available?

Well you were not that specific. It is easy enough to pull off the text from this link.

That is a better and more specific request.

Go here http://www.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/cfrassemble.cgi?title=201014

Click on the part you want and you can download either plain text or pdf. This is sorted into individual parts. You may want to script the retrieval to get them all. Or you can buy the complete version from the GPO.

You're right, I wasn't. Mea culpa. I knew what I meant, though! :)

Unfortunately, that seems to give you a separate file for each chapter. As long as I would be scripting, I think doing a script working from the original link you posted would give an easier product to work with. OTOH, if I could join the PDFs together, it would give me what I'm interested in. Hmmm.....

Reminds me of this joke:

George and Lenny decide to cross
North America in a hot-air balloon. However, neither was a particularly experienced balloonist, and Lenny’s mind quickly drifted from navigation to thoughts of how clouds look like cuddly little bunny rabbits. Upon realizing that they were lost, George declared, “Lenny, we are going to have to lose some altitude so we can figure out where we are.” George lets some hot air out of the balloon, which slowly descended below the clouds, but he still couldn’t tell where they were. Far below, they could see a man on the ground. George lowered the balloon to ask the man their location.

When they were low enough, George called down to the man, “Hey, can you tell us where we are?” The man on the ground yelled back, “You’re in a balloon, about 100 feet up in the air.”
George called down to the man, “You must be a engineer.” “Gee, George,” Lenny replied, “How can you tell?” George answered, “Because the advice he gave us is 100 percent accurate and is completely useless”.

Unfortunately, that seems to give you a separate file for each chapter. As long as I would be scripting, I think doing a script working from the original link you posted would give an easier product to work with. OTOH, if I could join the PDFs together, it would give me what I'm interested in. Hmmm.....
The seperate files are the only way I have seen regulations posted. Granted I am mostly on the FCC or FAA regulation areas. I think the GPO did that to make it easier to download specific subsections. If you want a complete copy they want you to buy that from them.

You can a cheap and very nicely printed Jeppesen FAR at the Aviator's Den Pilot Shop
While this may be true, it appears to have nothing to do with an "Electronic FAR." Or is there a downloadable version you didn't mention?

if you want part 91, shoot me an email, it exceeds the 4.77 mb limit to attach here.

Ok I think I come out for some kind of solution.

First of all, electronic far can be bought from here
http://www.amazon.com/2010-Aeronaut...m=AG56TWVU5XWC2&s=books&qid=1277759837&sr=8-1

Next free kindle software for android phone
http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=165849822

P.S. I'll try it later on today see how it works our.

That's the AIM only, not the FARs.
The Kindle 14 CFR are at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0045UA768

King Schools knowledge test courses come with a PDF of the FARs on the first disc, but it's usually 1-2 years old. I have the 2007 edition, but out of date regs = bad.

Someone else in here recommended the android version. Using the phone versions often gets free updates throughout the year. The formatting is usually good for a phone, but I've found that some editions have poor quality figures/images which can't be zoomed and are basically worthless. ymmv.

The only place I've found that offers PDF edition online is:
http://www.aviationebooks.com/products/aeb122/

They update on schedule, but I think you have to pay for updates. It's the same cost as buying paper, but more versatile.

Constructing a PDF from the egovaccess site is a big pain. I did it once and it was time consuming... then new updates came out through the register and I was out of data...

I asked GPO and got this response:
Response (H. Ramos) - 10/07/2010 03:58 PM
Dear Josh-Daniel Davis,

GPO is currently transitioning from the GPO Access online system of access to the Federal Digital System (FDsys), www.fdsys.gov. Upon completion of the migration of GPO Access content to FDsys, FDsys will completely replace GPO Access and become the system of record. Content on FDsys can be accessed at the print equivalent level on FDsys. Therefore, each volume of the Code of Federal Regulations and each Title of the US Code can be downloaded from FDsys. As you do not provide the location or reference a specific collection name in your inquiry, below are the links to both the CFR and US Code browse pages on FDsys:

http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/browse/collectionCfr.action?collectionCode=CFR

http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/browse/collectionUScode.action?collectionCode=USCODE

Thank you for contacting the U.S. Government Printing Office. If you need further assistance, please contact us via askGPO, our online help service, at http://gpo.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/gpo.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php. Alternatively, you may phone us locally at 202-512-1800 or toll free 866-512-1800.

In other words, GPOAccess is going away, and being replaced by FDSys.
FDSys has PDFs of everything published by the GPO.

The FARs are in 5 volumes, without clickable navigation, but nicely formatted, and updated every January 1.
http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/CFR-2010-title14-vol1/pdf/CFR-2010-title14-vol1.pdf - Parts 1 - 59
http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/CFR-2010-title14-vol1/pdf/CFR-2010-title14-vol2.pdf - Parts 60 - 109
http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/CFR-2010-title14-vol1/pdf/CFR-2010-title14-vol3.pdf - Parts 110 - 199
http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/CFR-2010-title14-vol1/pdf/CFR-2010-title14-vol4.pdf - Parts 200 - 1199
http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/CFR-2010-title14-vol1/pdf/CFR-2010-title14-vol5.pdf - Parts 1200 - End

Also, they offer a bulk download of the XML source data with is becoming the new, current, authoritative source:

Going up a level, you can get the federal register too.

Very cool! Thanks for doing the legwork that led to this discovery, and for sharing it!!

Definitely! This is something I think many of us have been waiting for.

The rest of what I've found out in tinkering with all of this:

* Getting a Server Error 500 right now. The server seems a little slow to present some of these, so I think it's an underpowered server generating on the fly. I would expect it to get better, but if it fails, try again. As a kludge, you can grab copies from me:
http://avfc52f.com/data/uploads/FARs/CFR-2010-title-14.pdf.rar 44mb
http://avfc52f.com/data/uploads/FARs/CFR-2010-title-14.xml.rar 4mb
http://avfc52f.com/data/uploads/FARs/CFR-2010-title-14.html.rar 3mb

* For the PDFs, they are over 1000 pages each, with large margins. I recommend CutePDF (cheap for windows) unless there's something free that works. You can trim out the front and back matter, and chop out the parts you don't want.

* When cropping the pages, I found the best crop was:
2" top, 0.6" bottom, 1.35" sides.

* For any printing, it's still cheaper to go with any of the big publishers unless you're printing just a couple of pages at home.

* For something with navigation links, the XML file(s) display VERY nicely in Chrome from their site, but the saved copy is ugly. Also, it doesn't display in IE, and doesn't have embedded images.

* The HTML/Text files don't have navigation either, but could be printed to PDF in an easier to read format. The drawback there is that the images are missing still from HTML. The PDF edition has all of the proper images embedded where they belong, but the tables and such aren't optimally sized.

Anyway, that's all. Time for bed.

Some years ago, I bought a FAR/AIM which included a CD version. I thought it was quite handy and a wonderful idea but have yet to find that combination since.
Dauntless Software has an application for FAR/AIM. Its price is $19.95. Sample and registration is all online.

Based on numerous post on the red board, of this is one, http://forums.aopa.org/search.php?searchid=3490711, I would be very hesitant to purchase any Dauntless product.

Does the King Schools still offer the CD FAR/AIM?
