Easy Ballast Ideas

I think plastic water bottles are going to be hard to beat, cheap, readily available, readily disposable ( most rural airports would not complain about a free case of sealed water bottles being left for free, and if they are not still in the case wrapping, less of a lethal secondary projectile in a crash (I for one would rather be hit with a few dozen plastic water bottles than a 40lb iron weight at the same speed..).

I think with water it depends. If its freezing, and the water is frozen, the freeze thaw cycle could burst the container. I'd just adjust my approach with something non water on those really cold days.
 
I like the combo of rice, water, and ammo for ballast.

I’ve only really done the case of water. Rice was some leftover Mexican in a to-go box in the back seat. Ammo was in a mag forward CG…
