ear pain from flying a problem?

I never really thought about this until now...whenever I fly commercially, there is a 50% chance that I will experience extremely intense ear pain during landing. It usually goes away after like an hour after landing. I'm not sure why some landings cause pain while others, I feel completely fine. Do you guys think this could be an issue that will prevent me from being a pilot?
 
Maybe. I consciously clear my ears as I start a descent. You should be doing that too. It's easier to gradually equalize your ears as you start down, rather than wait until pain happens then start.
