I eventually gave up on the "we have that service but not for you*" AAA and let my membership lapse.
No matter how many times I tried to get them to remove it, my auto insuranace includes emergency road service, where they will pay the bill if I submit it.
OK.
My problem is without AAA I have no idea how you call for road service from the nearest source from a cell phone. How do find the number for Gomer's (Goobers?) service station in Mayberry? I guess you could call the operator and beg for help?
This may a business idea for some smart operator (Jesse?). My cell phone has web access. Just make a mobile sized or really CSS hip web search page that works. Google http://local.google.com ? http://smartpages.com ?
* AAA has free maps. They're always out of stock on every map you want, like oh, your home state and the adjoining ones.
* AAA has travelers checks. The location to get the checks is a mere 35 miles away from you (when I'm in Chicago!!!???) and it's open from 9 to 5 Monday through Friday.
I did use the travel agency which gives THEM revenue. Road service wasn't a bad deal. The membership is too high, though.
