I eventually gave up on the "we have that service but not for you*" AAA and let my membership lapse.

No matter how many times I tried to get them to remove it, my auto insuranace includes emergency road service, where they will pay the bill if I submit it.

OK.

My problem is without AAA I have no idea how you call for road service from the nearest source from a cell phone. How do find the number for Gomer's (Goobers?) service station in Mayberry? I guess you could call the operator and beg for help?

This may a business idea for some smart operator (Jesse?). My cell phone has web access. Just make a mobile sized or really CSS hip web search page that works. Google http://local.google.com ? http://smartpages.com ?

* AAA has free maps. They're always out of stock on every map you want, like oh, your home state and the adjoining ones.
* AAA has travelers checks. The location to get the checks is a mere 35 miles away from you (when I'm in Chicago!!!???) and it's open from 9 to 5 Monday through Friday.
I did use the travel agency which gives THEM revenue. Road service wasn't a bad deal. The membership is too high, though.

411 and then ask for a towing company. The cost on the I had to pay for towing was the SAME as the time I paid the 'deductable' for my road coverage with towing.

call someone with a phonebook :)
stick your thumb out for a ride to the next town
doesnt work so well on the interstate where no one will stop anyway.
thats we me like some two lane highways, slow, scenic, lotsa towns to break down in/near.

Do you have a gasoline credit card? If you do you may be able to get a service package through them. Mine provides a better towing service for far less $ than aaa.

Just for another datum point, Mike. I've called AAA for tire changes a couple of times in the past couple of years, and had no problems. Similarly, I was there just this week to get maps and tour books for a variety of places (including MI/WI, adjoining states) and had no problems. The location is fairly convenient to my work; about 5 miles. I agree with you about their hours, however.

If you've got a Lexus/Beemer/Benz/etc a lot of them have roadside assistance. I've got it on the Lexus, and the Honda extended warranty even provides lodging/meal reimbursement if it happens while on a trip.... :)

I use google search via text messaging a lot to find stuff in a city I'm not familiar with. Just send a text page to GOOGL (46645) with what you want and the zip code or city where you are (like: towing 78704). A few seconds later you'll get a couple of text messages with listings back.

Call 911...Tell them its NOT an emergency but it could be one waiting to happen. I blew a tire on the way home from NC Wings weekend back in April and I called 911...they were really awesome and had someone out to me within 5 minutes. Then the policemen who came gave me a lighted escort to the nearest tire store after changing the blown tire to the spare.

depending on what they charge it may be worth the money.
I use Good Sams club road side service because they will tow my trailer also, but I pay 90.00 a year and it covers all my vehicles.

"ring" hello honey, could you drive here with the truck and the trailer to pick me up.
