Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Thursday endorsed predecessor Richard Daley’s infamous late night bulldozing of the runway at Meigs Field on the grounds the destruction of the airport opened Northerly Island to use by many more Chicagoans.

...

Daley’s unilateral decision to render the airport unusable was seen by critics at the time as an illustration of his tendency to run roughshod over opposition.

Chicagoans awoke one morning in March 2003 to discover city crews had torn up the airstrip, which was used mostly by recreational fliers and business executives coming downtown for meetings from outside Chicago.

Daley was unapologetic about shutting down Meigs, saying he acted to protect the city from terrorist attacks using small planes launched from the airport.

Daley’s wife, Maggie Daley, also was a vocal and influential proponent of turning the peninsula south of the Adler Planetarium into a nature preserve, and the mayor pursued that vision during his remaining years in office.

They're going forth with the hair brained plan to turn Meigs into a one stop crime center. At least it far enough away that the Gold Coasters won't hear the screams.

In other news Chicago has had a record 500 murders already this year.

You have to love chicago politics close the airport that makes money for the city.Open a public park that costs money the city hasn,t got.

How can that be? Guns are banned in Chicago.

Strangulation. Poisoning. Beating. Pushing off a tall building. Forcing people to listen to blathering politicians to the point they commit suicide. Come on man, use your imagination! :)

You forgot shooting someone with a gun.

I guess I only imagined that passenger terminal in the terminal building, where there were scheduled flights from Meigs In the past.

Not to mention the Fire Department Helicopter and the helicopters bring in critical needs patients to the downtown hospitals. And the Illinois Governors commuting to Springfield. Is that recreation or business?

They didn't dig up Lake Shore Drive because it's only used by recreational and business drivers.
