Almost made it to its first birthday. Face down on the ceramic floor, screen looks like modern art.

Anyone know if these are repairable at a 'reasonable' cost? If not I'm buying Apple stock.

Depending on what Ipad - its a couple hundred. happens to us all. Go buy a LifeProof...

Similar thing happened to me. Spent around $125 to get the glass replaced at a local ipad repair shop. Good as new.

Google ipad repair...

Or use this opportunity to get a Note 4 and you will never use the iPad again. Thats what I did when I spiderman'ed my iPad

Do you use your Note for Garmin pilot or any other aviation apps? I'm due for an upgrade and thought about it.

Yes I do. I found that with a real good pre flight planning routine, having the smaller screen doesn't matter too much. I get familiar with the flight prior to departure and then I don't rely on the screen much.

Had a problem with my I pad air ,went back to apple, they charge a flat rate, don't repair. They replace for 269.00.

You didn't say what kind of iPad. ...

What does it cost?

Repair and replacement costs depend on your iPad model and your AppleCare product coverage. Accidental damage isn’t covered under the Apple One Year Limited Warranty.

Have AppleCare+?

AppleCare+ covers two incidents of accidental damage, each with a $49 service fee. You can also use our Express Replacement Service to get a replacement even before sending us your iPad. You can check if you have AppleCare+ by entering your iPad serial number.

Out-of-warranty* cost:

iPad mini: $199
iPad, iPad 2, iPad mini 2: $249
iPad 3rd generation, iPad 4th generation, iPad Air, iPad mini 3: $299
iPad Air 2: $379
Plus a $6.95 shipping fee. Fees are in USD and exclude local tax.
*Accidental damage isn't covered under the Apple One Year Limited Warranty.
Make sure you back up your iPad before you send it to Apple or bring it to an Apple Retail Store.

Must have gone up. ~2 yrs ago <$100. Fell off wing during unsupervised loading.
Modern Art ipad screen is something we must all experience, I believe. Using a...cannot locate a mfg...but its a protective cover that is good for a 3-storey drop, right now.

Unless it is an Air2, yes, many shops will replace it for $100. Air2 unfortunately has no aftermarket glass available and you need to go to Apple for the experience of spending 3 hrs to exchange.

Get parts off ebay and fix it yourself. There are lots of instructions online. I've replaced the glass on my iphone twice and the connector 3 times.

It's an Air 2, no warranty. Based on above, I could buy a new mini for the ridiculous repair cost. Missionrepair looks much more doable. Has anyone bought the screen and DIY?

From a product standpoint (I was in CE engineering for almost 9 years) it's a crappy piece of work. All pretty and right-brained, but as fragile as an egg. The fact that you have to "protect" it with a $100 accessory is proof of that, and defeats the slick industrial design.

Wonderful.

I've got all my iDevices in cases which protect the corners and keep the screen from hitting the ground flat. I've never (knock on wood) cracked one despite several attempts on the iPhone.

If it is an iPad Air2 aftermarket screen replacement is not yet an option, you can only do the exchange right now.

The screen does not have to touch the ground. Mine was in a case and fell face down flat. The inertia of the glass bowing out into the gap is what shattered it.

Actuality, I may have some luck after all. It's not an Air2, it's a plain Air :
A1474 on the iPad Air Wi-Fi

I don't see any way to split the case, so how are they repaired?

Lot of YouTube videos.

Short answer is the glass is held in by an adhesive. You need to heat it up and bit and then slide something under the glass to separate it from the unit.

Screw it, take it to one of the shops and have them do it. If you break the new one on install, it's on you.

Local place wants $180. Prolly lack of competition.

Heh. Echo in here. Weird. :)

That's what happens when you click "reply" to a message, start typing your response, wife asks you to take out the trash, remember you were in the middle of something else, finally return to message, hit "submit reply".

I've always wondered why they don't produce a "ruggedized" version. Something like the old Walkmans with waterproof cases.

Mine always go into an OtterBox Defender case immediately. In fact when they're out of their case I get very, very nervous until there safely encased again.

I'm not trying to discourage the DIY approach, but I replaced an iPad mini screen one time and it started to "ghost click" when it got hot -- glass canopy, low wing... getting a beat down by the sun. Ended up taking it to Apple and having them redo it for me. No problems since then.

Huh. I must be doing something wrong. I have a $5 neoprene sleeve. I do this cool thing called, "Hold it", and then it goes back in the sleeve.

Jobs didn't design it to wear a rubber. It doesn't feel as good. But if it gets away from you you could be in a world of hurt.

Yeah, "holding it" is the problem sometimes, it needs to stay in something for me.
