Drone takes down chopper?

Did you read the article? Practicing hovering. Ground effect is a whole different matter than at altitude.

Anyhow "taking out the chopper" is kind of a mischaracterization even if you believe the instructor's story.

Never flown a chopper (translation: don't know what I'm talking about). Seems like you would not want to hover in ground effect in an area with nearby trees on a training flight. If you just hit the drone, wouldn't that be safer than making a rapid movement at low altitude? Wasn't there, so don't know any real details. Fortunately sounds like machine damage and no injury.

thanks for the link. Yeah some people are only a day late and dollar short. Some of us are worse.

At 50 ft above the tree line, they were OGE. OGE or IGE, the aircraft is quite capable of maneuvering. Obviously this pilot wasn’t aware of his surroundings.

"Oh crap, think we just hit that tree doing stupid chit"

"Man Mr. CFI, what are we going to tell the school"

"We hit that tree...while evading one of those evil drones"

"...Oh yeah, it was coming straight for us! man, you really think of everything, thanks Mr CFI!"

[The flight instructor made a hard turn about 50 feet above the tree line, and as he moved to dodge the drone, the helicopter’s tail nicked something — brush or a small tree.]

What was brush or a small tree doing 50' above the tree line?
