Drone crash

The correct phrase is not "drone", but remotely piloted aircraft (RPA), not that it matters.

"Crashes are highly unusual, Navy officials said."

ya think?

Just wait. Virginia's Governor has stated that he supports "lots and lots" of drones in the skies over the state. Wonder how long it will be until there's a midair (either drone-drone or drone-airplane).

or UAV? unmanned aerial vehicle

No, the correct phrase is now remotely piloted aircraft. I just returned from an Air Force conference, and this is what we were told. It probably makes the giant scale RC guys happy as well.

Maybe in the Chair Force, but we still call them UAVs in the Navy.

Did anyone explain exactly how much "piloting" occurs with some of these aircraft?

Drone Crash in MD

Some of you might be interested. An RQ-4 Global Hawk went down around Bloodsworth Island near Patuxent River NAS today. Crashed in a really swampy area, nobody hurt.

Story here.

Depends on the aircraft. We all different shapes and sizes, fixed wing and helo. We have some that fly an entirely preprogrammed flight with virtually no input from an operator and others that are fully piloted/guided.

I know very little about Global Hawks, so I can't comment on their specific guidance, if it is even releasable.

Yeah, most of the flight time on many of these vehicles is autonomous, and not piloted at all, let alone remotely piloted.

Re: Drone Crash in MD

Those things have no business in civil airspace.

Trolling for DHS money....

This was in R4002, a navy practice bombing range.

In the time it took for one full-scale drone to crash, we had a PC12 hit the swamp in FL, a Bonanza break up somewhere in the southeast and probably 50 other GA crashes........ I think we do best if we dont get too loud about the danger of aircraft falling out of the sky.

Things move fast... UAV is SO 10-minutes-ago... now it's UAS... unmanned aircraft system.

Air Force lost the first couple of those things to uncommanded stall spin accents, if I recall correctly. There was a video of one going plop that got shown on TV a lot.
