So you're flying along at (believe it or not) 3000' under a Class B shelf; not on FF... You're also 6 miles from a Class D airport... you pass 3-400' from what appears to be a drone at your altitude... True story... By the way, I didn't notify anyone...mostly because I didn't believe what I was seeing...

Well, you're outside the Class D so I don't think it would matter to them. If you're talking to someone tho, they prolly should hear about it....

You can report it if you want, but if they're an AMA member and operating within their "special rule for model aircraft" they're legal. If it was someone with an RPA certificate, then you have a ligitimate gripe. Trying to find the owner of the "drone" to try and distinguish between the two, will be next to impossible.

I passed near one last year, but it was well below me. Still kinda freaky. I check SkyVector's drotams now.

I don't think you can operate over 400' no matter who you are.... Unless, as a commercial operator doing tower surveillance or something you can be 400' above the obstacle, neither of which would get you to 3000' Whoa... wait a minute, there was a 2000' tower near by....mmmm...

Every once in a while, there's a photo drone around KAPA, and the operators play nice and inform the tower, and the tower informs everyone else. These days we have more problems with the lasers at night than the drones during the day, but there have been some issues at the various airports including KDEN.

Negative. AMA members don't operate under the 400 ft of part 107 (bottom). They have a special exemption under public law 112-95.

Now, endangering the safety of the NAS, interfering with manned aircraft or violation of VLoS, might be a possible argument but the burden of proof is on you. Would be difficult to prove and finding said violator would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Even if you found them based on registration, it would be their word against yours.

I was climbing through 15,000 and missed a weather balloon by only a couple hundred feet. I could see (but not read) the tag on it explaining what to do if this unit is found. It did surprise me.

I would think it'd be a very large drone if you could ID it from 400' away. Could it have been something like a mylar balloon, but closer?

Honestly, maybe... When I saw it, its size, shape etc. made me think "Drone" but it went by pretty quickly... Afterward, I wondered if it would have been prudent to notify somebody but in hindsight (20X20) I don't think it would have mattered much to anyone unless it came crashing through the windshield...

Swing around, go "guns hot" and take a crack at it.

You can chamber these:

I also check the BROTAMS before departing. I hate flying near cocky pilots who certainly let their presence known on Center.

Drones should be required to transmit their position and altitude by ADS-B.

So we can avoid them, and so that airspace violators can be found.

If we have to, why not them?

When I was at Eglin, Navy launched a cruise missile out in the Gulf, came ashore east of Destin, and then flew a track taking it up into Alabama and then back into Florida to hit a target on the Eglin range. There were protesters on Hwy 98 w/ big fishing nets held up on poles thinking they'd snag it. Morons.

Sometimes I'm in awe of just how stupid people can be.

Did you feel your life was honestly in danger?

If no, why do you feel the need to report every little thing to some government agency?

Lolz

How about everyone tells their government that NO one should have to buy, install, and have little monitors on all their stuff

Maybe it's just me and my lack of aviation experience, but I'm just not shivering in my boots thinking about "drones" "terrorists" Iran/Iraq/Russia or any of this other BS,
my biggest concerns are the government trying to threaten me out of more and more of my hard earned money and hard fought rights...and deer jumping in front of my plane or car.

Of course I don't watch TV, so this is just based on the completely inaccurate picture my of what my own eyeballs paint for me, not the super accurate story my government and their media tell me, so I'm probably WAAAY of base
