DPE question on retaking checkride

Is there a time limit on retaking the checkride in an abbreviated format just to cover areas missed in the initial checkride? As opposed to making the applicant do an entire checkride again. I mean in the FAA regs or the training for the DPE, not what an individual DPE might have as his personal policy.

edit: The site below mentions 60 days. This is an individual examiner's site. Where does the 60 days come from?

C. Credit Given for Satisfactorily Completed Areas of Operation or Tasks. An applicant for retesting may receive credit for those areas of operation satisfactorily completed; however, an examiner may re-examine an applicant on any area of operation required for the certificate or rating sought. If an examiner has reason to doubt an applicant's competence in areas of operation for which the applicant received credit during a previous test, or if more than 60 days have elapsed since the previous practical test, the examiner must re-examine the applicant on all areas of operation required for that certificate or rating. Applicants who do not have their FAA Form 8060-5 must take the entire practical test. The applicant may obtain a duplicate FAA Form 8060-5 from AFS-760 or the issuing pilot examiner.

I suspect most who fail want to get back on the horse as quickly as possible. If you went beyond the 60 days you'd need to spend three more hours with your instructor preparing or the ride.
 
You'll also want to get it retaken before your Knowledge test ages off. It doesn't extend the 2 years you have on that.
 
Thanks. Asking for a friend that is transitioning from Sport to Private. He just had a couple things to fix but life got in the way and he missed the 60 day window.

In that case, he has to do the whole test (ground and flight) over with all areas and tasks, including the ones he passed the last time. :(
 
8710.3 has been replaced by 8900.2, but the rule is the same.

For you Zen Googlers, I searched Letter of Discontinuance "60 days" site:faa.gov the first time around; 8900.2 uses the term "60 calendar-days" (yes, I know a Letter of Discontinuance is not what is issued in the case of my friend).
