Deb and I are planning a long weekend in Door County Wisconsin. Anyone know a good place to stay, must see's, must visits, favorite Airport ?

Looking to go up some time after Labor Day. Could stay a week if someone has a condo unit.

Land at KSUE, Door County Cheryland in Sturgeon Bay or if you don't mind smaller runways, 3D2 in Fish Creek.

Although I've never stayed around there, there are bunches of cabins for rent around Ephraim/Fish Creek/Sister Bay.

Ive landed at door county cherryland before, very nice area. Get a great view of the lake inbound and all that, pretty area. Ive never stayed up there though so Im no help for local attractions.

2700' is "smaller"? Okay, I'd (personally) buy that at 1700', but 2700'? EdFred is going to have a conniption fit!
It's also surrounded by trees. It wouldn't worry me but so far I've only visited on the ground. 2700 feet is more asphalt than I have in some cases at home, but we don't have trees at the ends.

When we stopped by several years ago they had Avis car rental forms on the door of the FBO.

Gary,

First of all, Door County in September should be beautiful. I mean, it is all year long, but with temps cooling down some and maybe even leaves changing if you go late enough, it should be a nice relaxing getaway.

Take bikes. Door County is excellent for biking (the pedal variety ;)). If you can't get bikes in your plane, there are rentals available.

IMHO, Fish Creek is the place to go. Fly in to 3D2. If you're into camping, you can stay at Peninsula State Park which is right next to the airport (I think the entrance is a couple miles from the field, definitely bike-able). If you don't want to camp, AirNav comments seem to indicate "Julie's" is the place to stay, and they'll pick you up from the airport.

Even if you don't stay there, Peninsula State Park has plenty of hiking and biking trails, the Eagle Bluff lighthouse, Eagle Tower observation tower, and did I mention the hiking and biking?

Get to a fish boil. IIRC the best place to go is in Fish Creek, it's white with a boardwalk type thing leading up to it. Sorry I can't remember the name! Looking on the web, I think it's Pelletier's. It's right on the main drag. Basically, they put a bunch of whitefish, red potatoes, and onions into a big vat over a wood fire outside and boil it for a while. Of course, all of the fat rises to the top. Rather than pull all the food through that at the end, this particular place throws a coffee can of fuel oil onto the fire so that the pot boils over. I don't even like seafood, but this stuff is good!

If you can do turf, take a day trip out of 3D2 and land at Washington Island (2P2). Do not land on 4 without a blistering headwind, 1300 feet downhill has got to be a challenge! (14/32 is 2230 feet, probably a lot more comfortable). Again, rent bikes. Nor-Door is supposed to have them at a marina on Washington Island too. Don't know much about ground transportation from 2P2. No FBO, so no comments on AirNav either.

Spend at least part of your day by taking the ferry to Rock Island. Be forewarned that cars, bikes, pretty much anything with wheels is prohibited on Rock Island.

Since you're going after Labor Day, I'd be willing to stop at 3D2 and 2P2 on my way to 6Y9 to scope them out a little more. I've never landed at either, I've only done Door County from the ground.

Enjoy your trip!

OK, scoped out! (and claimed for the ConUS Challenge too, sorry. :D)

3D2 has rental cars available if you are going to do something besides call Julie's and have them pick you up and rent bikes. $9/night tiedown. Recommend you call ahead during regular business hours to make arrangements, especially if you need a car. More info on http://goflyamerica.org/

2P2... Well, I just have to add this to my comments on the ConUS site:

Based on this I told Jann we need to fly up. Now she can't fly temporarily due to a medical issue (I'm in the hospital with her.) . Maybe we'll drive up.
