(Published: June 14, 2006) Workers with an oil spill contractor at the big pipeline terminal in Valdez wondered what the U.S. Coast Guard was doing at the terminal's small-boat harbor Saturday night.
Around 8:30 p.m., a Coast Guard patrol raft from the cutter Naushon approached unexpectedly.
The two workers asked their foreman what was up.
Don't know. Just go throw rocks at the boat, the supervisor said sarcastically, according to a company official.
So, one of the guys did.
Rocks.
His first throw missed, but the second rock hit the Coast Guard executive officer on the patrol raft, injuring his arm, said Jerry McDonald, project manager for Tatitlek Chenega Chugach LCC, the oil spill response contractor in charge of the little harbor.
"The boys were out doing a boom check," McDonald said, describing how his crews make sure an inflatable boom is in place around tankers in port as a guard against spills.
"They came back in, noticed the Coast Guard was in the harbor where we keep our small boats. They went up and asked their supervisor what they were doing up there."
The supervisor was supposedly joking about throwing rocks, McDonald said. But none of it makes sense. Why the foreman, who has worked at the terminal for 17 years, would say such a thing and why anyone would follow through is incomprehensible, McDonald said.
The worker who chucked the rocks from the jetty is 35 years old.
All three men were fired that night, McDonald said. He declined to name them, and efforts to reach the foreman were unsuccessful.
Valdez police are investigating.
Police Chief Bill Comer, who was on patrol Tuesday because the department is shorthanded, wasn't able to return phone calls.
The Coast Guard officer is nursing a bruised arm but is back on the job, Petty Officer Jeremy Dawkins said.
The Coast Guard is investigating too.
The cutter, based in Ketchikan, was on patrol, familiarizing new crew members with the area.
"It's a federal security zone that we enforce," said Petty Officer Thomas McKenzie.
Alyeska and TCC management say they are disappointed in the TCC workers. They do important work. About one-eighth of U.S. oil production sails out of the Valdez port aboard tankers bound for West Coast refineries.
"A complete investigation of the incident is under way," McDonald and another contract manager wrote to pipeline employees in an e-mail Monday.
"I am personally and professionally embarrassed by what happened here," McDonald said. "These people are out there protecting our homeland. To have that kind of reaction by people who worked for me. ... I don't even know what to say or what is going through their heads."
