The US goverment never gives up claim to stuff that is theirs, same applies to warbirds they 'temporarily misplaced' in a glacier or foreign countries war museum.

The problem was the he made a big deal about this and got the attention of the government bean counters. I know for a fact that a lot of NASA stuff got given away or kept as souvenirs and not just from the Apollo program either. The same thing happens in the military world too. I know when I left active duty I had to turn in issued equipment. I went to supply and asked them what they wanted. I gave them everything on that list too and not one thing more or less!!!

NASA was the same way. I worked there in the 1980s and when I left the same thing happened.
