Don't Drink And Drive--ANYTHING

After reading that entire story I think it is a red herring. A lady got a ticket for not wearing a seat belt and complained to a reporter, with some babble about coffee. It's just bad journalism.

Hope so. But then, it is more likely that the cop saw her drinking something than saw her without a seatbelt. At least that's my guess. . . .

Police often use visual cues as excuse to stop people. My guess is the LAW does not discriminate as to what is distracted driving and screwing with a cup of coffee can be distracting.
The officer used the distracted driving for the stop and ticketed the woman for the obvious seatbelt violation.
How do most criminals get caught? Doing something stupid in from of police! Just being dumb.

So one day a few years back, I was at a red light waiting for green (I usually do THAT), when this shiny new Honda makes the left from the cross street onto the street I'm on, same direction. I watched as she turned, incredulously, because although it was a nice, wide road, she was clearly not turning enough, and she drove straight into a telephone pole - not particularly fast, either.

Smack!

I got the green, pulled on across and put on the flashers, hopped out to check on her (and there were already douches honking at her. Real helpful.). She was fine, did not pop the airbags, but the car was severely screwed-up, nothing close to driveable.

She said that, as she started to turn, her cup of Starbucks in the cup holder started to tip over, and she dove for it so she would not mess up the carpet. Bad deal.

You might want to watch the video...they interviewed a cop that defended the stop and said drinking coffee is illegal.

Didn't seem like bad journalism or misrepresentation whatsoever.

The distracted driver/hands free laws are a wonderful catch all. Everyone is always guilty of that one. As for her defense of unclicking the seat belt post stop- I believe it, cause it happened to me. I got a seatbelt ticket after I took the seat belt off to get my wallet out of my back pocket. Was after the cop was at the car. Cars and driving in this world just sucks, I want a Moller Sky Car.

Bah! People engage in all sorts of distractions that keep them from seeing and hitting yours truly. Every time I see someone try and merge into me or some other stupid road trick I look inside the cage and see someone on their phone, or eating their lunch, or putting on makeup or whatever. If the cops tried to stop them all there'd be no one left to drive.

I had the opposite effect about a year ago. On a long distance trip out of state I got pulled over on a state hwy late Friday night in Nov. Cop asked if I had been drinking, and I showed him a diet Dr Pepper in the cup holder. He asked to smell it, I said sure and handed it to him, he thanked me for not drinking, warned me about the speed limit and I was on my way.
