I rejected a planned flight today for an off-airport landing to the northeast of Mt. Pocono, PA, because of an AIRMET for mtn. obscuration. But as I was checking weather, I came across the following METARS for nearby KAVP:

KAVP 201205Z 36022G255KT 10SM SQ OVC031 01/M03 A3004 RMK AO2 PK WND 010255/1205
KAVP 201154Z 01007G255KT 10SM SQ OVC029 01/M03 A3004 RMK AO2 PK WND 010255/1151 SLP174 T00111033 10022 20011 51013
KAVP 201135Z 36027G255KT 260V020 10SM SQ OVC029 01/M03 A3003 RMK AO2 PK WND 360255/1127
KAVP 201054Z 36015G244KT 10SM OVC027 01/M04 A3003 RMK AO2 PK WND 010255/1043 SLP171 T00111039
KAVP 201029Z AUTO 36007G255KT 10SM SQ OVC025 01/M04 A3002 RMK AO2 PK WND 360255/1025 TSNO
KAVP 201004Z AUTO 34020G248KT 10SM SQ OVC025 01/M04 A3002 RMK AO2 PK WND 340248/1003 TSNO
KAVP 200954Z AUTO 35007G255KT 10SM OVC025 01/M04 A3002 RMK AO2 PK WND 340255/0949 SLP167 T00111039 TSNO

I guess somebody finally figured out that they were putting out BS (or maybe they fed their hamster or something), because the next METAR seemed to have it right:

KAVP 201254Z 02006KT 10SM OVC033 02/M03 A3006 RMK AO2 PK WND 010255/1205 SLP183 T00171033

I must be missing something....the last metar looks almost the same as the rest. What am I missing?

my briefing last week showed rain in San Diego, while all the adjacent airports were severe clear. I called my cousin in SD and he told me there wasnt a cloud in the sky. Where the rain came from i have no idea.

haha, I knew I missed something. I wish I had called for a weather breifing during that time. How funny for the breifer to have to say gusts to...Two Hundred Fifty Five Knots?

255? Sounds like an 8-bit variable maxed out and got stuck!

To paraphrase an old saw, it's better to cancel a flight because they were wrong than to make a flight to find out they were right.

I've been on both sides of that.
