I think he had been having some pretty hefty health problems within the past few years. When my wife and I were in Hawaii on our honeymoon Dec 2005, the headlines there were talking about how Don Ho was making his return to shows after a heavy surgery that year.

Weird. I was listening to Israel Kamakawiwo'ole just the other day on iTunes and was thinking about Don Ho and how he was doing these days.
