I remember hearing about a case where a flight instructor got a violation for flying in the traffic pattern without the required VFR cloud clearances. I believe it happened about eight years ago in the Long Island New York area.

Does any one else recall the details or have a link to the FAA case documents?

Dave, I don't recall all the details but I am sure it happened at KFRG Republic Airport in Farmingdale, LI.

We have a few low ceiling days around here when I have to say "No." If the ceiling is difficult to call and the ASOS seems to be calling it shorter than estimated, we'll go take a look and if the clearance is there. If not, we stay in the pattern and land.

But, it's always a good time for ground.
