did anyone say 'saree'?

Many airports have curfews (noise) including Budapest, Cologne/Bonn, Frankfurt, Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, and Zurich.

Many more are closed to airplanes with malfunctioning toilets at any hour :)

let the poopy jokes commence

"Due to restrictions on night operations at most European airports at the time, the pilots decided to return to Chicago..."

does anyone know what those restrictions are?

I know at least some European airports close their towers at night, and no aircraft are allowed to operate when ATC is closed. I would also assume customs availability would be limited during late night hours, which would make handling an international flight difficult. Add to that, none of the passengers would have visas for the European countries, so they may be stuck in holding. Lots of issues pop up with International diversions.

I get not landing in Europe....kind of. But 4th grade Geography told me there's a lot of cities in the US in between Chicago and the eastern US Coast. Including 2 hubs for Air India.

You should go to 5th grade Geography where they show you the world is a sphere and not a flat Mercator projection map. The ORD-DEL flight doesn't go anywhere near the US East Coast. It goes pretty much up the Lake Michigan into Canada and over to the southern tip of Greenland (where this one turned around) It would have continued over Iceland, and northern Norway and Sweden to cross into Russia and down toward the subcontinent.

Years ago, a friend of mine was on a flight from Detroit to Germany that turned around 5 hrs into the flight due to a mechanical issue and returned to Detroit. Man would that suck! 10 hrs and you ended up where you started!

Cologne is actually one of only two German airports that doesn’t have a curfew. UPS operates its European hub there.

The only time I have to India (in 2001) We landed (Swiss airline) at about 3am. The airport was very busy. India's location is such that many long haul international flights land (and take off on the return flight) in the wee hours of the morning.
