Looking to fly the family (wife and 15 yo son) up to Detroit for Labor Day weekend. KYIP appears to have reasonable fees for my Twin Comanche and we’ll likely be staying downtown. We’ll probably spend some time at the Jazz Fest and the Henry Ford Museum looks interesting. Might jump the bus across the river to Windsor for the novelty of it, but otherwise no real plans.

Would appreciate any recommendations for things to see/do/visit and whether YIP is the best option or not.

Thanks!

The Henry Ford museum, Greenfield Village and Rouge Tour are all interesting.
Michigan Flight Museum is right there at Willow Run. https://miflightmuseum.org/tickets-hours/ I don't think there is access from the airport side though.
Ford Piquette Plant - First building owned by Ford Motor and where the first Model T was built. https://www.fordpiquetteplant.org/
Ann Arbor is a college town - some museums and stuff.
Belle Isle has some interesting things, but you need a state park sticker to get on the island. https://www.detroithistorical.org/dossin-great-lakes-museum https://www.belleisleconservancy.org/anna-scripps-whitcomb-conservatory

Flown into KYIP several times, the pilot room has a lot of goodies for the kids too. I’m not sure if they would charge for a twin but there are so many airports in the area that you can find something that is free. I also fly into KPTK and VLL. Woodward Ave is basically the heart of Detroit, so you can drive that from Detroit to Pontiac and see the neighborhoods along the way (some small stretches of sketchy but it has come a LONG way). You can stop and walk the towns of Ferndale, Royal Oak and Birmingham. Birmingham being the nicer one. I’d recommend the burgers at Redcoat Tavern in Royal Oak (31542 Woodward Ave) and if you like pasta Eddie’s Gourmet in Oak Park (25920 Greenfield Rd). I’m excited for you for the food:) have fun

YIP’s reasonable on fees (for my twin): $40 facility and first night of parking waived with purchase of 20 gals of fuel. $40/night thereafter. We’ll be getting an UBER downtown, so no car for exploring unfortunately.

Thanks all for the info, should be a nice weekend!

Had a great trip. YIP was fantastic. No charge aside from fuel. Uber’ed around, hindsight says we should have gotten a rental car. Ford museum was amazing, belle isle was nice, little tram around downtown was very convenient, jazz was exceptional. Had a great time overall, thanks for the recommendations!
