I didn't know we are going to Australia - send me some details, pal!
Well, Dave, my seester, Anna, is a full-on Aussie now, having secured her naturalized state a couple of years ago. She lives in Adelaide, South Australia (a beautiful place), and has done for twenty-odd years. We have visited once (December 1999 into January 2000), and certainly intend to go back again one-a-these days.
In the process of doing my snooping about, I determined that one could quite easily rent aircraft from Lilydale Airport, at Melbourne (see:
http://www.lilydaleairport.com.au/ ). Nice folks, very helpful in my inquiries, and confirmed that US license transfers with minimal effort and expense (and they'll help), after which rental checkout much like what we have here for any responsible FBO. IFR ops would be more problematic (unless you're an ATP, lucky stinker!), but the WX there is very good, esp. in summer, which we'd favor (favour).
Since one must enter Aussie (in most practical scenariae) through either Melbourne or Sydney anyway, and there are three of us, it just makes sense to fly to MEL, rent the Bo and fly on from there, thus creating opportunity for more and greater Aussie adventures, airborne.
What I'm thinking, anyway.
