DEN controller thinks Mayday is fake

That sort of c_ap combined with the attitude of one particular controller who is vocal on the redboard leads me to think we need to comb through ATC ranks for idiots....

So does the declaring captain need, "the secret code?" I've never seen that discussed in 7110.65....

I was calmer than he was when I had smoke. Flyin' like the Pros.

I bet as soon as the person that went to the hospital saw smoke, he/she said "MY LUNGS!!!!"

The story, as written, shows the express pilot declaring an emergency with no call sign. When he's specifically asked his call sign he only gives the numbers and not the name. On follow 2nd follow up pilot doesn't respond. At this point I'm thinking 'fault pilot'.

Now...I also know the news is THE WORST at reporting...ya know...news. They screw everything up. So, based on reality I'd say, 'who knows who screwed up?'

I wonder how many fake radio calls they get since the controller was immediately suspicious. I can see how there was confusion about the number but I don't think that part was anyone's fault per se, just a limitation of radio communication. They mess up our number at least a few times per flight.

Not a good day to have an emergency, I was in there half an hour before this and it was down to a 600' ceiling and NASTY out.

If I could ever find a location close enough to DIA with appropriate Internet bandwidth, we'd all be listening to the LiveATC recording and not reading a (likely) misunderstood or botched report from an FAA recording and Press Release.

Dave Pascoe and I have been chatting for years about it. DIA is one of the only major hubs not covered.

DIA is unique in that it has so much land around it, you can't get radios close enough to copy the ground traffic. I could put the air stuff on top of a mountain and filter the crap out of it (awful RF noise floor up there) but ground comms would be iffy.

I don't know about aircraft frequencies, but the problem on 16 for marine frequencies the issue is semi rare, but not unheard of; especially due to the costs involved since none is questioned as to veracity. When a kid gets on the radio and says 'Mayday mayday mayday', it starts a ball rolling that doesn't stop until an answer is found. Luckily with modern radio gear, the FCC already has the position instantly found off the transmission and they plot it on land, drive to the house, 'arrest' the kid, scare the crap out of them, issue a large fine to the parent and leave.

We had a guy get ahold of a Denver PD capable radio (GE EDACS) and started using it to mimic dispatch calls, send cops to fake calls, various other stuff. Was a few years ago.

The FCC Field Office folks enjoyed finding him and telling DPD where to come get him. They took him down standing in his front lawn with a handheld.

They get away with it for a while... Once the DFing wheels get rolling they don't stand a chance.

No matter what you do, or how thoroughly you investigate, background checks, whatever, you can not beat the ten percent factor.

The ten percent factor means that of any given group, no matter how great and wonderful they are perceived to be, ten percent of that group will prove themselves to be complete idiots and morons. Every individual will be a complete idiot and moron at least ten percent of the time.

If you give yourself a careful and unbiased examination, you will discover that you too are a complete idiot and moron, ten percent of your life.

The ten percent factor applies to everyone except me. It's just the way it is. :D

That would translate nicely to the popular bumper sticker...

"1 in 10 people are idiots. If you have 9 smart friends..."

(Yes there's a logic flaw in the statement. It's a bumper sticker.)

I just heard some dip weed on the ham radio say that one of those "Click It Or Ticket" road signs reminded him to put his seatbelt on.

"Maybe I'll get trained to put that belt on one of these days..."

Honestly if he's too stupid to do it prior to engine start, and it requires an automated traffic road sign to remind him, I seriously doubt it.

So are you higher or lower?:D
