Our local airport over the last couple years has spent a bunch o bucks on improvements including a high chain link fence around the whole airport.
tonight just at dusk, I watched a very nice herd of deer grazzing between the runway, that are now fenced in..

I sense there is venison to be had. :)

I bet they jumped the fence and I bet they will jump out again.

Contact the game warden about the problem. They might issue permits to harvest deer.

After a guy took out two deer with his Baron, (which did not do the Baron any good) it was no problem getting a permit. It was limited to does only since deer season started two months later.

We did that in West Virginia and got 13 deer in one day. We had a venison roast at the fly in the next weekend.

Zeldman,

Some of my railroad friends have some great recipies for Venison backstraps on the grille. Thanks to the 'Deer in the headlight syndrome they have an alpomos unlimited supply. Train crews notify them and our DNR closes their eyes to railroad kill.

Haha that's funny. AVL (Ashville NC) had a pretty tall fence around the airport and the deer were jumping over that, so they replaced it and built it even higher. I swear it must be 14'. Our tax dollars at work, sigh....

The Deer Olympics, eh?

The old fence, and it was high too, was no obstacle for the deer and they kept getting out on the runway. My airline had a BAC-146 land one night and after touchdown a family of deer decided it was a good time to cross the runway. Killed one deer but did little damage to the jet. I rode the Capt's ass for months accusing him of murdering Bambi.

LMAO.... their beautiful creatures but dumb as a doorknob...

Astoria, Oregon, had problems with herds of elk on the runway. One night a Lear 36 hit one on takeoff. No one (but the elk) was hurt, but the airplane was destroyed in the ensuing fire. Later improvements to the perimeter fence seem to have helped.

When I lived in Texas the game warden was a friend of mine. I would give him a call and tell him my freezer is low, and within a couple days he would pull up with a couple deer in the back of his truck.

Nothing like coming home late at night and finding a deer or two hanging from the A-frame in the front yard... and having to skin it and quarter them before going to bed...

Using a plane is a very expensive way to ‘harvest’ a deer. Besides fences, the 308 should come out when deer are a hazard at the airport. I realize it takes the multifaceted approach to keep wildlife hazards in check.
