Well done... that's probably not much fun in a fly-by-wire jet fighter. Sounds like an instructor was with him- was this a 2-seater on a training flight?

Sounded more to me like it was someone else in his group flying overhead. Great example of resource management.

It was his wingman who was handling the comms to ATC that you heard. That is standard CRM for a flight of two, it allows the guy with the problem to concentrate on flying the airplane and fixing the problem.
 
Did you notice the pilot's respiration rate going up as the ground got closer, then slow after the jet stopped?
