So let me get this straight. He hopped on the first flight he saw going west to try to get to Ethiopia even though all such flights would go east, not west. Then he wasn't scared and he was fully awake at 35,000 feet seeing the clouds underneath him, etc. What? This makes no sense.

Confirmed. Expedia returned a Korean Air flight that connected through Seoul. You're right Darwin did miss one.

5 hours + at 35k? How is that possible? No o2, freezing temps... I'm not getting it.

People have been deprived of oxygen at lower altitudes, for much less time and sustained brain damage.

All I can figure, assuming the story is actually true, is the freezing temperatures put his body in some sort of state of hibernation, causing his oxygen uptake requirement to be close to zero.
