Darwin at work

Problem is the stupid are still outbreeding us.

Stupid is as stupid does, stupid and alcohol are a great mix.

Need more details.
Did he set it right side up and light it so the mortor would shoot up and the downward pressure was enough to kill him or was the tube upside down basically pointing the barrel at his head?

BTW You know there is a video of this on someone's phone.

Just curious how many pounds of pressure under the "cannon" when the mortor fires off.

Natural selection at work. Heard a news report on the radio today... actual sound bite from a local acquaintance of the victim: "Yesterday we lost a kind and smart young man"

...I think I can argue pretty strongly against at least half of that statement.

The fireworks that are legal here are so tame I don't see how they could hurt you (other than maybe a burn).

They must have more powerful ones where this guy is from.

Somewhere on youtube is a dummy that actually put a sky rocket up his butt and had someone light it while he held his sack out of the way.

Once it started lit off he clinched and instead of launching it really fried his buttocks and everything else down there.

I don't have time to find it right now.

This is from the obit of a guy who blew his head off while igniting a commercial fireworks shell on the 4th in 2011:

Jesse William Burley, 41, passed away on Monday, July 4, 2011. He died doing what he loved to do, not listening to what people told him to do and having a great time.

The stuff you can buy here legally amazes me. Rockets that travel 500' in the air and stick 4" in the ground when they return to earth, mortors that could take your head off, all legal. Bottle rockets? Illegal of course.

I'm glad it's July 6th.

Something about alcohol and gunpowder..................

As the old joke says...

The department of alcohol, tobacco and firearms should be a section of the local convenience store, not a government agency!

The 6 July Boston Herald has part (all) of a letter from the brother of the young Maine man who died.

One sad part is the brother's claim that "He's not an idiot" and blaming the death on a misfire. Apparently the mortar didn't lauch, it basically exploded on top of his head.

The brother was only about 5 feet away, and arguably is lucky to be alive given how close he was to the explosion.

This, but it was NOT a misfire. It was operator error, more than likely.

The mortars comes with a tube and 6 shells. The tube is used to launch the mortar like the barrel of a gun. You load it from the muzzle. As the shells fire they leave debris in the bottom that builds up causing the tube length to change if you don't clean it out. If there is not enough tube length the shells don't go high and can explode low to the ground. I've seen this happen many times, including Friday. Everyone laughs and thinks its cool.

That letter is further proof that idiocy is genetic.

Counterintuitive as it may be, bottle rockets cause a large number of injuries, often involving children and eyeballs. Nobody hands a kid a 2.5in mortar, they do give them bottle rockets.

Maybe the guvment should make laws to protect us since they know more about what we want than we do....

I grew up with cherry bombs and M-1 artillery simulators... at 10 years of age. I still have all my fingers and toes. Also had parental supervision... Black Cats back then would split a coke can..... a steel one.

Poor old G.I. Joe didn't survive. He was in his fox hole when an M-1 went off in the bottom. Joe lost half a leg, most of his clothes and never was the same again....

Yeah, a 22 year old killing himself out of drunken stupidity is always laugh out loud funny. Will you send an e-mail to his parents and siblings saying "LOL" also? Or is it OK to act like a douchebag because you're semi-anonymous here?

That goes for a lot of you in this thread. Did he act stupidly here? Yes, definitely. Can we conclude that he was stupid overall (when not drunk)? No. Does his stupidity in this instance make it OK to laugh about how hilarious his death is? No, not really. It's one thing to laugh about someone who does something stupid and is lightly injured. It's another to laugh at someone's death. When one of you has an engine-out failure and attempts the impossible turn and dies, I'll make sure to comment on the thread saying "LOL, Darwin award material folks, thank god we weeded *him* out of the breeding pool."

Think about your behavior. Would your employers approve of you ridiculing the death of a 22 year old? Is that how you would act in person? What if you knew this person?

ROTFLMFAO! :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Yep, that's probably what your teachers thought of you. Can't fix stupid, obviously.

So its okay for you to call people names, but not okay for others. Got it.

Speculation is what we do here son, if you don't like it move along.

What's the speculation? I didn't say you can't call people names. I said you should show some human compassion for a senseless 22 year old's death. You must be a joy to be around, or very desensitized to young people dying. Do you work in the neo natal ICU or something?

Oh, trust me. I've seen too many young people die, held some taking their final breaths in my arms. Saved a few also. You? Or do you just stay behind your momma's skirt and let others take action?

It wasn't a senseless death, he will make the Darwin Award finals! :dunno:

Oh, trust me. I've seen plenty of young people die.

It wasn't a senseless ddeath, he will make the Darwin Award finals!
I'm honestly embarassed for you.

The whole "hollier than thou" thing doesn't cut it here son.
I see you went back and edited to add the above. Not sure how old you are to be calling me son, but you certainly prove the adage that older doesn't mean wiser.

Lighten up, Francis.

So according to you this would be funny if he maimed himself and lost an eye or something?

I mean you say "It's one thing to laugh about someone who does something stupid and is lightly injured. It's another to laugh at someone's death."

So tell us where the line is.

If he spent the next 40 years in vegetative state?
What exactly is and isn't worthy of being called a moron?

It's terrible he died but (and his parent's know this) He died doing what kills people. (I know it doesn't make it less painful for them) but they know it and so does everyone else. He was being a jackass and it killed him and nobody should be surprised by it. Sad? yes. Surprised no. Is it funny? Well he was the first person to die this way in 180 years because it seams most people know that this is really stupid.

Anyway, if you can make a chart showing the tracability matrix between level of humor versus severity of injury, that would be helpful.
