Damn X 2

NAS Whidbey still has a Flying Club??? I thought all the Navy clubs were gone now.

there are a few around yet, this one really belongs to the MWR facility.

but this may end the club. I hope not because they sell 100LL at a dollar less than any one in the area, and a good friend works as their A&P-IA, and their chief pilot is a good friend and fellow VN vet (F-8 crusader pilot) and uses that arrow a lot.

You're right, not enough details here yet to know if it was CFIT. I just meant "hitting hills". NM, NV, WA...

Did you notice the water at the bottom of the bluff? he hit the cliff coming aboard the Island, IOWs it quit on him over the water doing the west beach approach to the station.

do a google maps search for " hill road Coupeville Wa."

the accident site is just south of the road and to the west at the bluff.

I didn't realize there were any left - the Navy ran the North Island club off about 3-4 years ago.
The Navy flying clubs are an entity all their own they do not belong to the facility, they are directed from a desk in the pentagon and they operate IAW the 37.10 instruction.

when they are disolved it is from DC. and usually due to safety/money/management/ problems.

Interesting...I suppose it makes sense. What I recall happening at NASNI was the base kicked the club out and they moved the planes to MYF.......then the club was probably disestablished by the folks in DC 6 months to a year later for lack of interest. Once the club was off the base, everyone just went to the other (better) local civilian clubs.
