PBS is coming out with a documentary about the Titan II accident in my backyard. It's based off the very excellent book Command & Control.

The film looks like it will be a very good watch and I recommend it and the book. The book will show you how razor thin our understanding and control of nuclear weapons are. The book covers this accident as its backbone, while telling the history of our attempt at making nukes Fail-Safe. Which is discussed the times we've been lucky at Fail-Deadly not occurring because of ONE relay.

Thanks; will look for it. I remember when that happened and later I had an NCO who had been there and was involved in the cleanup and had some stories.

It's really difficult to create a nuclear explosion. A hundred small things have to happen perfectly. A lot harder than this type of agi-prop would lead you to believe.

The fact that a number of nuclear weapons were in fact lost or damaged during the cold war shows that the guys who designed them knew what they were doing.

Here's a more balanced book on nuclear accidents and incidents, both civil and military.
