I'm going to Dallas for the next 6 weeks on odd schedules - staying and working in Plano.

Anything interesting to see or do? Food suggestions? What about a good place to buy wine (I try and keep a bottle in my room so I can work from the room one night or two a week and have something to enjoy that isn't $44 a bottle Ravenswood)?

I know there are a few dallas based folks (Spike, Whirlwind), so I figured this would be a good place to get the low down...

Cheers,

-Andrew

I live in Plano, look me up.

There is a veritable plethora of good eating places in Plano, but not much in the way of historical or cultural attractions. There are many movie theates, mostly multiplexes.

If you have six weeks, there are plenty of things to do and see. How about the Book Depository in downtown Dallas? The Mustangs in Las Colinas (Irving). Visit The Stockyards in Fort Worth, Billy Bob's. The Vineyards in Grapevine. Uhh, you can also pick from authentic Grapevine wines.

Eating? Just about anything or any price is available. Lotsa Tex-Mex.

I lived in Grapevine for a number of years. DFW is situated on the property of several cities, Grapevine being one. There is an old time train that makes a round trip between Grapevine and Fort Worth - The Tarantula. Great sight-seeing.

Don't forget the aviation museums:

Cavanaugh in Addison http://www.cavanaughflightmuseum.com/
Fontiers of Flight in Dallas http://flightmuseum.com/

Other touristy stuff:

The Tarantula Train: http://www.tarantulatrain.com/

Southfork Ranch (of TV "Dallas" fame) http://www.southforkranch.com/

Deep Ellum (if you are into music and any kind of bar known to man) http://www.deepellumtx.com/ or The West End (more historic bars/places to eat) http://www.dallaswestend.org/

And then of course, there is the JFK Sixth Floor Museum: http://www.jfk.org/

Oh, and a restaurant to visit...the Hyatt, downtown Dallas. It sits at the top of a tower; I've forgotten the height. The seating area revolves 360 degrees. You can see the entire skyline of Dallas. The revolution takes about one drink's time. Best at night.

There are more restraunts than you can shake a stick at in Dallas... :)

Sometimes I get the feeling that eating out has become a sport here, but thankfully Sue has gotten me eating at home more, saves money and is better for you anyhow... We just had two ears of corn and some ground beef for lunch... sounds boring, but we put some onions, garlic, and tomatos in the beef and ground pepper on the corn, make it wonderfull... total cost, about $3 total... :D

Ahh, the almost married life...

In any case, there is plenty to do here, as others have suggested...

Everything listed on that page is worth doing or seeing...

Cool, thanks for the suggestions everyone. If I'm available one night, I'll post to the board asking if anyone is up for grub. However, I think my schedule will be primarially "sleep, work, eat, work, sleep repeat" for most of the trip. Being able to sample what Dallas has to offer is important for my sanity :goofy:

Cheers,

Andrew:

I'm in far north Dallas which is adjacent to Plano. Addison airport is four miles from my home: lots to seen there and we might be able to do an aerial tour if you can break free.

Plano has lots of spots to eat out, but also check out Addison--100 restaurants within a couple of miles.

Lots of different kinds of activities here from Theater, symphony, museums to western themed outings. You'd have to share a little more of what you like to really guide you. I'm sure several folks will offer to help if you let us know when you'll be able to get free and what kinds of things you enjoy.

Best,

Dave
