Here is one part of the D.B. Cooper story I was unaware of;
there were over a dozen similar hijackings in the following year

Around that time there was also a nut who tried to hijack a small plane, I forget exactly what, to Cuba. The person in the left seat was a student pilot; he instructor had gone back into the FBO for something when the hijacker got in, assuming the student (who was post solo) was a qualified pilot. While airborne the student managed to convince the hijacker that the plane didn't have the range to reach Cuba from where they were (which was true) so a fuel stop was planned, at which point the hijacker was captured.

Come to think of it, I think he did, and made up some story to tell the hijacker what he was doing.
