Current cockpit fire extinguishers?

Halon is still around and the best. I just replaced my 30 year old (!) extinguisher this winter with another halon one.

I priced Halotron and surprisingly a 2.5# from Sporty's was close to the best price (for unexpired extinguishers available from ebay etc)

My newest installation. Halotron, because I keep a couple around. My DAR commented on how much he liked it. ECC35913-39D5-4AF6-B7F3-EEDCB50BEF28.jpeg

Indeed, very interesting thread

Halon 1211 is still the "gold standard" of commercially available agents. Halotron I has about half of the extinguishing capacity per pound vs Halon 1211, so you need twice as large a bottle.

The newest, latest, greatest clean agent is called 2-BTP. Boeing recently (December 2017) certified 2-BTP based extinguishers for cabin use. 2-BTP will be sold commercially as Halotron BrX, and has a lot more extinguishing capacity than Halotron I, within about 10-20% of Halon 1211. Expect to see BrX extinguishers on the market soon, they are already being delivered on new-build aircraft but I'm not aware of any that available on the open market yet.

Mine is red. That's about the extent of what I know about it. It also came with the plane when I got it 9 years ago, so, I'm probably better off blowing at it like like it were birthday candles.

Read and learn. Halon is better in cool temps for indirect application based on the boiling point. That isn't very important in cockpit fires, or in my experiences, ground fires in the engine compartment. I've extinguished my own plane using both and didn't recognize an important differences. They both worked. No residue. The halon one was close because the bottle was too small. Whatever you choose, get the biggest one you can install into your mounting place.

Just took a look at mine, it was a direct replacement, however when you read the manual it said something about needing to be installed with the supplied bracket, even though the new extinguisher was the same form factor as the one it was replacing, all good ether way, couple bolts and it looks better too ;)

So far Kidde has the only certified portable Halotron BrX (2-BTP) extinguisher. Not sure when they will be available for over-the-counter purchase, but expect them to become the standard soon enough.

You really need to know how the tests are run before you can expect double the extinguishing in a typical airplane fire. As if there was such a thing as a typical airplane fire.
