Crazy email characters

Though not specific to Dave's question, the apostrophe seems to be the most incorrectly-used punctuation mark in written text. Errors are rampant when referring to plurality of words: photos(NOT photo's); FBOs(NOT FBO's); and uncountable other incorrect applications when only plural reference is indicated, NOT a possessive factor.
Also, the it's(correct when "it is" shall be inferred) and its(when possession is stressed) are, without a doubt, the most common transgression in written documents.
And noting that Dave correctly applied It's(above).

There! Rant over. Happy Sunday, everyone.

[EDIT] I don't know how to answer your question, Dave. The problem has something to do with programming in software. I know nothing about that but Jesse, or other IT folks, can probably answer your question.

Blame MS Word and Microsoft in general. It was their idea to change ASCII apostrophes into "prettier" ones. When copied into text, they unfold into their UCS-16 or UTF-8 representations.
