This is a huge deal for those trying to gain blue prints from the manufacturers of antique and classic aircraft. The companies can no longer call old data proprietary and deny you the prints, it does not mean they will be cheap.

From the article, the data was to come from the FAA, not the company, so there shouldn't be much danger in having the price run sky-high to discourage requests for copies.

The American taxpayer shouldn't be forced to subsidize private aircraft restoration, so the price should reflect the actual costs of finding and copying the data....

That's true, but the FAA would not give it up, until they had a company's permission, and if the company was out of business the FAA would stone wall the person trying to get the data, that was in fact part of the FAA files, as certification requirements.
 
Hooray! This is REALLY an important decision(!!)

Agreed - and it will become increasingly important with the passage of time.
