There's a charitable, scenic railroad not far from me. I spent a few pro bono hours taking pictures for them today. Here are a couple of quickly edited and resized shots, for people here who like trains.

That track looks like it needs some serious repairs.

Yeah... they had a hard enough time wresting control of that segment from some "historic preservation" committee that tried to tear up all the track and made it into a bicycle path. They succeeded, for the most part; but they still run a scenic rail line over what remains.

Somehow, tearing up an historic rail line to make it into a bicycle path doesn't strike me as "historic preservation." But what do I know.

The situation made it easy for me today, though, because the train has to run slow. I just set up at each crossing, bridge, etc., took my shots, and then hopped in the car and beat it to the next one to take more pictures.

That particular segment of track is along Route 30, in Delaware County, about three miles north of Arkville. The railroad itself runs from Arkville on the southern terminus, to the Roxbury Depot and Railway Museum on the north.

North of Roxbury the old rail line becomes a bicycle / walking path.

I rode that train when I was a kid. we got our cow feed off the box cars at Bloomville, Hamden, Delhi, or Walton.

Small world!

I've always liked railroads, and I think it's a shame that they've torn up so much of the old tracks. The D&U is down to less than 10 miles of (barely) usable track, as described above.

Irene also did damage to the remaining scenic lines. The Catskill Mountain Railroad is down to about five miles on the Esopus line, and two miles on the Kingston line.

I do occasional contract photography for a railroad that's thinking about reviving commercial / scenic passenger service from New Jersey, through PA, into central New York, running on the old Erie line (presently owned by N&W and leased to NYS&W). That would be nice.

If they actually do it, I might be able to finagle a cab ride out of the deal. That would be nice, too. :D

I mostly rode the train from Stamford to Deposit, and all of the R/R property between Bloomville to Deposit has been returned to private owner ship and very little of it can still be seen. the snowmobile clubs kept it open, after the R/R pulled the tracks, but not so much any more.

Bloomvill was the place where the tracks "Y"ed to follow Route 10 to Deposit, and the other track to East Meredith, and the Handford Mills, and then to connect to the rail lines at Oneonta.

Yeah small world. :)

The rail is ok. I've seen worse on excepted track. As long as it meets class 1 standards then it is good. Those standards say 5 good ties under each 39' section of rail. One of those need to be under the joint. The gauge is to hold between 4' 8" and 4' 10". Also they can go no faster than 15 mph. It never says anything about the "waviness" of the track. That is assuming they have class 1 track.

The waviness isn't hat bad but from the pictures you can tell that it helps induce harmonic rocking which can be dangerous if speeds aren't kept in check.

Very nice pictures though.

Here's one of me firing the Sierra Railway #3 last weekend.
