At our EAA meeting Tuesday night the opportunity arose as is described in a post-meeting e-mail:
Jerry:
Here are the particulars on the trip.
We are traveling in a 27' Winnebago motorhome and will be at Camp Scholler all week. We are leaving my home in Poland Spring on Friday morning, July 21, but some people may be coming down from the Bangor area on Thursday. We will be returning to Poland and Bangor on Sunday, July 30. I plan to stop overnight in Ohio and pay a brief visit to the airplane I learned to fly in in Indiana then arrive at OSH sometime Sunday the 23rd. We will need to leave for home Friday, the 28th or very early on Saturday the 29th. To encourage folks who are afraid of the Winnebago's horrendous appetite for fuel, I set a fixed price of $500 that includes round trip transportation, tolls, camping fees and accommodations. Each person is responsible for his or her own food, beverages, drinking water and admission to AirVenture ($98 for EAA members), although I would like to work some community meals. We plan grocery stops along the way, so you do not need to buy food ahead of time food if you did not want to. I am planning to have some road meals packed by my wife and to take all the beer, wine and bottled water that my daughter and I need. We have room for coolers to supplement the refrigerator/freezer in the camper, but keeping them in ice can be a pain after the first 2-3 days. The camper is equipped with a bathroom, shower and kitchen that includes a microwave. There are also showers in the campground if that is your preference. We have air conditioning, but only when either the generator or the coach engine are running. There is also an inverter for keeping our cell phones, computers and other battery toys charged. I will bring lawn chairs and an outdoor table. Some people bring bicycles and other ground transportation, but we don't have the room and the shuttle service is pretty good. You can't take your own transportation inside the exhibit grounds unless you are handicapped.
I'm 59, an EAA chapter officer and am building an Rv-9A while I fly rentals. My daughter, Meg, is 25, married and not currently a pilot. Maurice is 60 and a British pilot adventurer who is flying a Cub around the world. Alex is Maurice's son. The three of us old guys will be sleeping inside on bunks with real sheets while the young folk will be outside in tents. On the road someone will sleep in a chair and two people will have to double up (not you).
If you have never been to OSH I should tell you it can get very hot and you need sunglasses, a hat and lots of water. Although there are "tankers" of drinking water, we prefer Poland Spring. There are plenty of food concessions, but the food is expensive. I sometimes have a noon meal in a cafeteria for about $10 or a breakfast in the campground for the same, but generally prepare my own. I also like to go "home" for lunch to cool off in the A/C and sometimes take a nap. The evening programs are great and well attended, so it pays to bring your own lawn chair. They are kicking things off with a free Beach Boys concert Monday night. All this going back and forth makes it a good idea to arrive early on Sunday to get a campsite near the main entrance.
I hope you decide to go with us. Let me know as soon as possible. Call my cell almost any time.
I was just about to commit from home when it suddenly occurred to me that I'm booked for a voice/piano benefit concert(I'm only the voice part) on August 26. And though I'm working on the music I've yet to have a rehearsal with my accompanist. 10 days away from her or my potentially compatible schedules probably wouldn't be so good....... so I had to bow out. BUMMER.
