Cool - SR71

Darn good RC version. Does it leak fuel for an hour after flight? to be authentic of course.

[thread creep]
Were the D-21 drones every successful?

Well at least he isn't wearing Birkenstocks with black knee socks :D

A few years back when I lived in Sullivan they had a RC fly-in/show at the airport. Some of the airplanes there cost more than my C-172 did. I thought it was pretty neat that the FBO worked with this group so they would have a place to have it. A couple pilots out of the St.Louis area that flew out to Sullivan to get fuel through a **** fit about it and complained to the city and FAA that they had to wait to land. (If they would have checked the NOTAM they would have found out it was going on). After that they city stopped the FBO from hosting it. It was one of the biggest draws to the airport for several years.

Once at Capital in Waukesha I flew in and the pattern included RC planes (this was also a special event and pre-arranged and NOTAMd).

I was a little suprised but then there were enough jumpers falling out of the sky that a few models didn't seem to mix things up.

They would use the grass runway and would simply suspend their flying when something larger than 16:1 showed up.

They were giving instruction at one point and there was a rig that permitted them to jack one controller into another with a cable. Sort of the RC equivalent of dual controls. There was a father/son team flying a Pitts and after one aborted landing the dad asked the son to take the reins for fear they would damage the model. It was really cool.
The models were pretty intense and I was told, actually somewhat dangerous. There was a lot of emphasis on procedures and safety and crowd control. I would have felt very comfortable flying to an event like that again.
