Today at practice, an old WWII bomber flew over the field, presumably coming out of KPIT. I have no idea what kind of plane it was, but it was probably 5000AGL, had an all-silver paint scheme, split tail, and twin engines. The front looked like it was completely rounded (but I couldn't be sure). Any way to figure out what type of plane I saw, or preferably which one?

Maybe this?

Could a been a b25, definitely not a p38. Looked much bigger/longer than a b25 though.

Yes, it was quite loud. Probably that then. Wonder if it was doing a flyover of the Steelers game for Veterans Day or even coming home from the Dolittle Raiders reunion in Dayton.

If you would have said four engines I would have said B-24.

What markings were on it?

Too high to tell (and I was playing soccer at the time, so only got a quick glance)--looked 100% silver to me.

That's probably it. More of a rounded nose. I've seen one fly overhead, noisy bugger, but it's good noise.

If you're inside one it's the loudest noise you have ever heard your entire life. Notorious for making pilots deaf during WW2. There is no sound like a round engine sound.

Sure about 2 engines? Lots of B-24's later in the war were bare aluminum.

Never mind, I believe David's right about none flying.

Probably Pacific Prowler, Panchito, or Maid in the Shade. Those are 3 touring B25s that give rides.

Its pretty hard to mistake a 2 engine plane for a 4 engine plane.

I would guess a B25. By the description given.

He saw it at PIT so, I'm guessing it was Panchito returning from the Doolittle final toast that took place yesterday in Dayton.

Could also have been 'Mishap' from Farmingdale NY. Those were the only two B-25s that would have been flying eastbound today.

Prowler and Maid in the Shade didn't attend.

I too have been outdoors when the Prowler flew over and enjoyed the song of its engines in flight. And if you think that was loud, try to imagine what a whole squadron must sound like.

A couple of years ago, almost the whole collection of flying B-25's were in Dayton for a Raiders Reunion. They formed up for a flyover and it was amazing. Lasted for what seemed at least 5 minutes and made a glorious sound.

My guess it was Panchito the OP saw.

Cheers

Sounds like a bucket of bolts, but very thrilling when they open up. Was louder, more thrilling and had more power on high octane, high lead.
