    Hey guys,
I'm based out of West Central Florida and do some trips to Gainesville, Fl once in a while. I'd like to branch out a little more and fly into Georgia. Are there any places to see or eat that you would recommend in southern Georgia? Thx

SSI and Jekyll come to mind right away for a lunch run. Southern Soul BBQ at SSI and the Wharf at Jekyll.

Savannah is kind of cool. Stay in old-town. There are no really good GA FBOs, but the airport is not that bad.
And in Old Town you can walk to dozens of cool historical places, good bars and great restaurants. Don't need a car.
And you can walk around with an open beverage and not be harassed.

In Atlanta, they ask you what business you are in.
In Augusta they ask you what your Great Grandmother's maiden name was.
In Macon they ask what Church do you go to.
In Savannah they ask you "What do you want to drink"!

I spent my teen years as a Navy brat in Brunswick when NAS Glynco was still operating. Don't go there (but SSI and Jekyll are good).

SSI is great, walkable, with a free crew car available
Bring a bicycle if going to Jekyll

Does Jekyll still have the free Red Bugs?

Free? I asked about renting one and the quote was hundreds of dollars, I ended up walking.

They used to be $50 for the first couple hours, then a bunch more.
Then a couple of years ago they changed it to Free for some period of time. (I forget how long).
I didn't really think that was going to last.

SSI would be my choice ,fuel is not to expensive, and everywhere is walkable. They have a hotel at the FBO if you get stuck for weather.

I still would like to make it to SSI. How's it compare to say, Hilton Head, or Myrtle Beach?

I wouldn't say that it is "walkable" unless you are just talking about going to Southern Soul from the airport and back. There is quite a bit to do there, but it is pretty spread out.

From the replies it seems fair to say South Georgia is basically okay on the coast, nothing special in the interior, say south of a line through Macon and Augusta? Fly over country?

At some point soon (I think April/May timeframe) there is the Vidalia onion festival in .. wait for it.. Vidalia, GA. Haven't been to it, but I did look at one point and there is an airport nearby.

The Okefenokee Swamp is very cool to visit, but I don't know what flying in accommodations would look like.

There's the AF Museum at Warner Robins that's actually pretty cool, but I don't know if ground transportation is feasible to get you there from Macon.

Pine Mountain (PIM) has a decent BBQ joint nearby from what I've heard. Lots of the RV guys from around here will do lunch runs down there. PIM is GA friendly and will loan out a crew car IIRC.

That's about the extent of what I know..

Also Calloway Gardens is near Pine Mountain and at least used to provide ground transport. KPIM aka Harris County.

Not sure. I haven't been down there myself, just see group email traffic from the RV guys flying down there every once in a while.

Americus has a dealer for Ag planes that's kind of cool to see. Plains is nearby if Jimmy C is of interest.

not real close....but in the area of Americas...closer to Lumpkin is an interesting place for a hike, Providence Canyon State Park. Pretty cool looking canyons and you get a lesson on erosion for added bonus. No great airport access though....looks like EUF might be the closets at about a 40 minute drive

oh, and another interesting state park, Near Douglas... General Coffee State Park, it's very hilly and does not seem like Southern GA at all! There's a little heritage farm there, and some nice trails. That's about it....

I've been across South GA not extensively but a fair bit, and I've got nothin' else....

Pretty much, unless you are looking for hunting/fishing.
I have always said there are three Georgias.
    1. Atlanta
    2. The coast from Savannah to Brunswick/SSI/Jekyll Island.
    3. Everything else.
All three are so different from each other they could be separate countries on separate continents.

I think I would make the north Georgia mountains category #4.

Well, yeah, I do remember hearing North Florida referred to as "South Georgia" several times when I first moved to the Jacksonville area....so maybe Apalachicola is valid

Northwest Florida is sometimes derisively referred to as LA by locals. Lower Alabama.
