Hello

Next year I will be moving to Canada from Australia, I currently hold a New Zealand & Australian CPL with Mulit IF rating.

In my research into converting my license to the Canadian system I found that it is easier and cheaper to convert from FAA to Canadian than it is from Australia direct to Canadian.

However it can only be converted on the basis that the FAA license is NOT issued on the basis of a foreign license. So my question is how do I go about the conversion?
Can I just sit the Cpl exams and do a flight test (with some training) or will I need to first get a private license?
Or is it ok to get a private license based on a foreign license as long as I do all the CPL exams and flight test?

Any help wold be great.

Thank you.

You will have to do the following:

  1. Sit for the US instrument rating written test.
  2. Get a US PP issued with instrument rating based on your foreign certificate and US instrument written.
  3. Sit for the US CP written test.
  4. Meet the experience requirements for a US CP, which you probably do except for the three hours of practical test preparation.
  5. Take the US CP practical tests in single and ME airplanes.

See 61.75 and Subpart F of Part 61 of the Federal Air Regulations for details.
