Continental Diesels Finally Real?

So are we really going to see a viable diesel piston from an established source?

The key question to me is how will the cost compare to AvGas engines of similar output.

They bought the technology from SMA (France) some time back. From Wikipedia:

"Rather than develop a new Diesel engine from scratch, Continental decided to license an existing design to develop. The company did not release details on which engine they licensed, but the aviation media have identified it as the French SMA SR305-230 engine."

It will be lots more money.

Isn't that the engine that is time lifed and can not be rebuilt by any one but the factory?

No, that one is the Thielert Centurion. It's a converted Mercedes auto engine, with a geared reduction. The SMA was a ground-up aircraft diesel design, direct drive. SMA has spent something like a billion bucks on its development, and a year ago there were only about 50 flying in the whole world. Continental will be buying technology with the worst bugs out of it.
