Consultants: Ever felt this?

If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bull****.

It is all about managing expectations.

My first gig as a consultant, I was tasked to build a software system for instructor stations. When I presented my first functional system, the software manager for the prime (I was a sub) told me they'd want to be able to use different inputs files. I replaced that , yes and here were all the command line switches to specify different files than the defaults. He looked at me for about 2 seconds and the said "You are a consultant. You should have said "I'll get back to you in a week and tell you how long that will take."" It stuck with me... Although to be fair, he kept me on the project for 3 months after letting all the other consultants go and called me back for additional work. So I think I did OK. And I got ~40 hours of F-5 flight sim time as part of the work...
